Church of Saint Salvation

in Skopje, Macedonia

Place of Goce Delchev`s eternal peace

Church of Saint Salvation, or in Macedonian language "Sveti Spas" was build in the end of 17-th and the beginning of 18-th century over the remains of old frescoes from 16-th century. It is located in the center of Skopje, between Old Fortress (Kale) and Old Bazaar. This church of of great importance to Macedonian people because in the middle of the church`s courtyard there is a stone sarcophagus witch contains relics of the greatest Macedonian VMRO revolutionary Goce Delchev (1872-1903).This is a holy place for all those who fought and still believe in Macedonian independence and freedom. Goce Delchev`s remains were in Bulgaria for a long period of time, but after the Second World War, thanks to Bulgarian leader Georgi Dimitrov, Goce`s remains were transported to Skopje, and he got his peace in this church.
Second importance for this church is the altar, iconostasis, that was build in the period from 1819 to 1824 by World`s famous Macedonian woodcarvers who turned iconostasis into the highest state of art that any native Macedonian or visitor must see.
